The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential further challenges.
